4 horror/dark movies to watch during Halloween

The second part of our favorites horror/dark films that are worth watching, from 2018 and last year. You can find the first part of this conceptual series here, with 12 other movies. As halloween is fast approaching, we will continue our exploration of hyper-dark scenarios and other chaotic psychological “shit shows” with a much deeper meaning than they seem. All mentioned films are already available on VOD and streaming platforms.


What Keeps You Alive is a 2018 Canadian thriller film written and directed by Colin Minihan. It stars Hannah Emily Anderson and Brittany Allen. Jackie and Jules are a couple celebrating their first anniversary at a secluded cabin in the woods belonging to Jackie’s family. From the moment they arrive, something changes in Jules’ normally loving wife, as Jackie begins to reveal a previously unknown dark side — all building up to a shocking revelation that will pit Jules against the woman she loves in a terrifying fight to survive.


Thelma is a 2017 Norwegian supernatural fantasy drama film directed by Joachim Trier. A college student starts to experience extreme seizures while studying at a university in Oslo, Norway. She soon learns that the violent episodes are a symptom of inexplicable, and often dangerous, supernatural abilities. Thelma is a lonely young woman from a religious family who has lived a sheltered life under the protection of her father and disabled mother. She struggles to make friends and soon after moving to Oslo to attend university begins to experience unexplained epileptic seizures. When she meets another student, Anja, she discovers that her feelings for Anja trigger uncontrollable telekinetic powers.


Women Who Kill is a 2017 American comedy film written and directed by Ingrid Jungermann. Here is a synopsis: Morgan, the co-host of a true crime podcast, thinks her ex-girlfriend’s new love interest is a murderer. This is a Brooklyn-set tale of two ex-lovers who host the titular morbidly-themed podcast, and find their insular social circle suddenly invaded by a possible genuine compulsive murderess.


Replace is a 2017 thriller directed by Norbert Keil, starring Rebecca Forsythe, Lucie Aron, Barbara Crampton. When a young woman who has a disease that makes her skin crumble away discovers that she can replace the skin with someone else’s, she seeks out victims to preserve her beauty. This is a stylishly viral love story about reverse aging. Afflicted with a dermatological disease that causes her skin to deteriorate, Kira understands that she can replace it with the skin of other girls. However the treatment is expensive and debilitating but rather than watch her body fall apart Kira makes a deadly decision. Accompanied by her lover she embarks on a murder spree so she can have a constant supply of donors.
