An Ode to Rue in Euphoria
Euphoria is an American teen drama television series created by Sam Levinson and based on the Israeli miniseries of the same name. It premiered on HBO on June 16, 2019. Rue is the main and most complex character of the series, she is based on Sam Levinson’s life. Euphoria is interesting not because of its depiction of our lost generation, or its realism, but because it doesn’t seek to give us a glimpse of hope. The series is set beyond the decline, beyond the decadence. There is no place for lamentations, the downfall isn’t imminent, everything is already dark. The acts of hedonism performed by the protagonists are dog tears. Everything they try to express is given to us in fragments, inconsistently, via drugs, total submission, and a lack of dignity. Most of these young people are desperately trying to transcend a condition that can’t be transcended, but by attempting it, they almost come to see. This playlist is focused on Rue, Jules and Lexi; portrayed by Zendaya, Hunter Schafer and Maude Apatow.
