Xena & Gabrielle L subtext, back to basics
The relationship between Xena and Gabrielle often appears as a simple friendship in the eyes of neophytes. But the importance of their duo in the fandom of Xena: Warrior Princess suggests something else. Indeed, the series is one of the rare case where the word subtext can be used in a relevant way, which won’t prevent me from abusing it elsewhere. It was certainly due to the canon’s focus on the close friendship between Xena and Gabrielle. And in a famous interview, linked below, Lucy Lawless (Xena) declared that she didn’t know what was the nature of her feelings for Renee O Connor (Gabrielle). Which undoubtedly explains the freedom taken by the actresses around their character’s chemistry. At times, the show deliberately brought the L subtext as close to text as it could get without ever crossing the line; It is also possible to find many faux-lesbian scenes shot to confuse the viewers. Either way, Xena/Gabrielle relationship was meaningful to a lot of people because it was the closest to show a lesbian relationship as an epic romance that most X/G fans had ever seen on TV at the time of its original airing. I just wanted to continue worshiping these two goddesses and going back to basics.
